Military bases: it’s crowded in the Red Sea

The string of coups at the West of Africa may direct the world’s attention to Niger and Gabon, but the real action is to be expected in East Africa. Stretching from the Suez Canal up North to the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, the Red Sea is a hub of military activities.

The Africa Report provides an excellent overview of all military and commercial activity. The below map does not include information on bases in Yemen because reliable and up to date information on air and war bases along Yemen’s Red Sea was very limited when this map was created in November 2020.
